End of Summer Outfit Wrap Up!

0

Tragically, summer has come to an end. As much as I look forward to the change in seasons and a change in wardrobe, I’m a creature of sunshine, blue skies and warm temperatures – spring and summer are hands down my favourite time of year, and I find very little to celebrate about a Melbourne winter.

We’ll probably have another month of warmish weather before it declines to ‘mild’ and then ‘downright frigid and gloomy’, but in the meantime this is probably the last of the summer outfit pics until next Christmas rolls around!

So, for a summer BBQ I wore the Bernie Dexter Varick dress in koi print. This w as the first Bernie Dexter dress I ever bought, and remains one of my favourites, both for the beautiful Japanese print (I lived in Japan for three years and my son is 3/8 Japanese – I’ll leave you to figure that out!), and for the fit of the dress. This is the ONLY BD dress I’ve purchased that hasn’t required any alterations at all! The bodice features some light boning, but in all other ways it’s quite similar to all of Bernie Dexter’s dresses: gathered and very full skirt, back zip, delightful hidden pockets! I’m wearing the 1XL and it’s a comfortable fit on 41-33-41 measurements.

Headband from Mimco, and necklace bought in Spain by my sister.

I wore the Trashy Diva Streetcar in purple and brown plaid for a day of tumblr_n0hqpfjG2T1qmwbzpo1_500running errands (school drop off/pick up, meeting at the school, a trip to the post office, groceries, stopping at a friend’s work place for a chat etc!), and paired it with some bright lemon-yellow accents in the form of ballet flats, my handbag, and this delightful little pin my sister picked up for me. I’m more than a little fond of it. She had purchased a few different pins and waved in their direction saying ‘I picked one up for you, you’ll know it when you see it.’ Rosie the Riveter and a disparaging comment towards Tony Abbott? That’s clearly meant to be mine!

Couldn't have said it better myself, Rosie!

I’ll probably be getting quite a bit of wear out of this dress over autumn, again pairing it with yellow, before winter, when I’ll probably switch to wearing it with red or black (if I had a nice thick purple cardigan I’d seriously consider that, too!).

tumblr_n112uhYrSL1qmwbzpo1_500Choosing a favourite dress in my wardrobe is sort of like trying to choose your favourite child … it’s a hard call to make because you love them all (particularly true for me as I have a policy of selling on anything that I don’t feel 100% fabulous in!). But this red Trashy Diva Ballerina dress has been getting a lot of wear since it arrived, and has become a bit of a go-to dress for me as it works beautifully as a casual/informal dress but also something that can be dressed up nicely, smart-casual style. A night out with friends? Yep! My 32nd birthday? Totally! Dropping my son off at school before running errands? Of course! It just suits all manner of occasions, and I’ll be keenly waiting to see if they release any new colours/prints in this style!

tumblr_n0qzpgOKIC1qmwbzpo1_500On the left, I’ve paired the Ballerina with a matching All Blacks clutch and flats. I’ve got a full review written up for these coming soon, but for now, they’re  FABULOUS and I love them. Beautifully well made, the shoes are extremely comfortable, and I love how functional the clutch/purse is. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this brand again. For the record, I’m wearing the European 38.5 in these and I’m an Australian size 8, so I’d say they run slightly large (I usually buy a European 39).

Next, another Bernie Dexter number, this time the Chelsea dress in High tumblr_n0yhbddKqk1qmwbzpo1_500Tea. I love this print and have owned the dress for over a year now, but had only previously worn it a couple of times. Why? Because I didn’t own blue shoes, that’s why! I’m a dedicated matchy-matchy person, so wearing black or red or yellow shoes with this dress would be soul-destroying for me … I’d previously made do with a pair of gold sandals. But now I own not one but TWO pairs of blue shoes, and suddenly the opportunities for this dress are better … times two! I wore the dress for another day of errands and paired it with the All Black shoes pictured above. Perfect! Also worn with my little Jubly-Umph brooch!

For checking out some rental properties, I went reasonably demure for me, without entirely dropping my love of colour and quirky prints! Alannah Hill’s Hello Sailor dress in black. I don’t get a huge amount of wear out of this – I prefer my nice full skirts and I don’t find the button down look to be the most flattering on my shape – but for occasions like this, where I feel like I might not be entirely ‘appropriate’ in one of my retro styles, this dress is a wonderful compromise. And it has pockets. I do like pockets.

tumblr_n14l1q4s1z1qmwbzpo1_500(I didn’t get the apartment, but I won’t hold it against the dress … there was an extremely aggressive young professional who also inspected on the day and I kid you not, he was actively trying to psych everyone else out by glaring and sending filthy looks every which way! No idea if he got it but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he’d offered bribe money or got his rich daddy to call in some favours!)

tumblr_n1c48cjQp91qmwbzpo1_500I wore this outfit – the Wheels and Dollbaby Dita cardigan in coral with a Betty Le Bonbon black circle skirt – out for dinner with friends one evening, and then the next day for another property inspection. I reviewed it last week so won’t go into details, but will say that of the red and the coral, this is definitely my favourite, just because it works so well with my fair-but-rosy colouring. I’m a HUGE fan of coral, and it works beautifully for both day and evening wear. The platforms are Little Lamby, from Iron Fist, and yes, they’re a perfect match for the coral in the cardigan. Very comfortable to wear as there’s a solid platform in the toe, but they’re man made materials and thus can get a bit sweaty with prolonged wear.

tumblr_n1eec0qWz11qmwbzpo1_500Finally! Yep, the Trashy Diva Annette in Smokey Leopard again. I’ve said it before: hugely versatile. I wore this out for White Night Melbourne paired with red accessories – belt, hair flowers, shoes, cardigan, and for most of the evening I was wearing a red velvet capelet over the top. Very comfortable, and works well for both hot and cooler weather – White Night was reasonably crisp and I was grateful for the heavier weight of the fabric. I’ll be getting a lot of wear out of this throughout winter I imagine, paired with either more layers of black, or as I wore it here, with red. Here I’m wearing it with my cherry red Doc Martens, in preparation for an evening of standing and walking for hours on end. I still ended up with horrific blisters but they kept my toes safe from the absolute clusterfuck of crowding in the Swanston/Flinders intersection. Hellooooo 550,000 people in one small space!
